FLOOR &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; 지상 2층 규모 정원을 끌어안은 집 – 원주 반곡동 단독주택 원주시 반곡동의 한 주택단지, 치악산의 능선이 멀리 보이는 모퉁이 대지에 노부부의 삶을 위한 집이 들어섰다. 대지는 두 개의 도로에 접하며, 그중 한쪽에는 인도가 길게 이어진다. 거주자의 사생활이 쉽게 노출될 수 있는 조건은 설계의 주요한 화두가 되었고, 집은 그에 대한 응답으로서 독특한 입면과 공간 구조를 갖게 되었다. 건물은 L자 매스로 계획되어 대지 안쪽에 작은 정원을 품고 있다. 이 정원은 단순한 외부 공간을 넘어, 집의 중심이자 일상의 배경이 된다. 1층 거실은 도로를 향한 입면에는 고측 띠창만을 두어 외부 시선을 차단하는 대신, 정원을 향한 면은 활짝 열어 내부와 외부가 자연스럽게 이어지도록 했다. 노부부가 일상 속에서 안전하게, 그러나 풍요롭게 정원을 향유할 수 있는 구조다. 내부 공간은 기능적이면서도 열린 감각을 지향한다. 1층과 2층의 거실 모두 코너창을 두어, 1층에서는 정원의 친밀함을, 2층에서는 치악산의 원경을 담아낸다. 주방과 거실은 하나의 큰 공간으로 구성되어 시원하고 넓은 주거 경험을 선사하며, 침실 역시 정원으로 향한 큰 창을 통해 계절의 변화를 가까이에서 느낄 수 있다. 화장실은 고측창을 활용해 사생활 보호와 동시에 자연 채광과 환기를 확보했다. 외관은 주변 주택들과 차별화를 꾀했다. 이웃집들이 주로 벽돌과 박공지붕을 사용한 것과 달리, 외장에는 석재의 질감을 닮은 세라믹 타일을, 지붕에는 밝은 회색 징크를 적용하여 현대적이면서도 단정한 인상을 남겼다. 특히 인도를 따라 배치된 계단과 그에 맞닿은 주방 벽체는 기능적 프로그램을 모아두면서, 공용공간을 최대한 정원 가까이 배치할 수 있도록 했다. 1층과 2층의 코너창은 서로 다른 방향을 향하며, 공간마다 다른 차경을 제공한다. 이는 정원이자 치악산이라는 두 풍경을 집 안 곳곳에 끌어들이며, 거주자에게 다양한 시선과 경험을 선사한다. 결국 이 집은 ‘정원을 끌어안은 삶’을 구현하는 동시에, 모퉁이 대지라는 조건을 새로운 가능성으로 전환한 사례라 할 수 있다. A House Embracing the Garden – Single-Family Residence in Bangok-dong, Wonju In a residential neighborhood of Bangok-dong, Wonju, on a corner site overlooking the distant ridgeline of Chiaksan Mountain, a home for an elderly couple has taken shape. The site borders two roads, one of which is lined with a long pedestrian walkway. Given the potential exposure of the residents’ privacy, this condition became a central design concern, leading to a distinctive façade and spatial organization as an architectural response. The building is planned as an L-shaped mass that embraces a small garden within the site.More than a simple outdoor space, the garden becomes the heart of the home and the backdrop of everyday life.On the first floor, the living room presents only a high horizontal strip window toward the road, shielding the interior from public view, while opening generously toward the garden to create a seamless connection between inside and outside. This arrangement allows the elderly couple to safely and comfortably enjoy the garden as part of their daily routine. The interior spaces aim to balance functionality with a sense of openness.Corner windows are introduced in both the first- and second-floor living areas: the first floor captures the intimacy of the garden, while the second frames the distant landscape of Chiaksan Mountain.The kitchen and living room are composed as one expansive space, offering a bright and generous living experience. Bedrooms also face the garden through large windows, allowing residents to experience the changing seasons up close. Bathrooms incorporate high-level windows to ensure privacy while securing natural light and ventilation. The exterior distinguishes itself from neighboring houses.While surrounding homes predominantly feature brick façades and gabled roofs, this house employs ceramic tiles with a stone-like texture for the exterior cladding and light gray zinc for the roof, creating a modern yet composed appearance. Notably, the staircase aligned along the pedestrian walkway and the adjoining kitchen wall consolidate functional programs along the street edge, enabling the shared living spaces to be positioned as close as possible to the garden. The corner windows on the first and second floors face different directions, offering distinct framed views from each space. By drawing both the garden and the distant Chiaksan landscape into the interior, the house provides residents with varied perspectives and spatial experiences. A House Between the Horizon and the City – Pyeongneung-dong Mixed-Use Building, Donghae In Pyeongneung-dong, Donghae-si, Gangwon Province—on the threshold where the sea meets the city—a new piece of architecture has emerged.The site faces the horizon of the East Sea while, in the opposite direction, embracing the everyday urban landscape of apartment complexes and an elementary school.The tension created by these two contrasting worlds became both the starting point of the design and the driving force behind the entire building. The structure rises four stories above ground in reinforced concrete.The first floor is a piloti parking area; the second and third floors accommodate neighborhood commercial facilities; and the top floor is designed as a single-family residence.Although the programs differ in character, the element that unifies them is the contrast expressed in the façade. The façade facing the sea opens generously through full-height glazing and terraces, welcoming waves, wind, and light without restraint.As the building rises, each terrace steps back incrementally, forming a dynamic three-dimensional mass. This horizontal recession echoes the rhythm of waves accumulating toward the sea, while at the same time providing each floor with an independent view and a private outdoor space. In contrast, the façade facing the city is composed almost entirely of solid walls with minimal openings.Firmly enclosed, it shields the interior from the noise of urban life and creates a dramatic counterpoint to the openness toward the sea. This dual attitude—open and closed, light and shadow—captures the inherent duality of the site while asserting a strong architectural presence. This building does not remain merely “a house with a beautiful sea view.”By simultaneously embracing opposing elements—sea and city, openness and enclosure—it stands as an architectural response to the site’s unique context.
